Scents are usually associated with memories. Scents have the power of making us remember specific imagery of a certain person, event or thing. It is the sense we remember best. Therefore through the personification of the scent leaving the house, the speaker is suggesting that she is letting go of her husband and the memories they had together. She is allowing herself to move on. The poetic voice further implies that she has accepted her husband's death.
